Course Abstract

While the importance of evidence-based practices is acknowledged by practitioners, it is not easy to sort through competing claims. This update on recent treatment research in ASD will focus on identifying current popular approaches that have evidence, and at what level.

Course Learning Outcomes Preview Exam

  • After this course, participants will be able to identify three practices that have evidence to support their use in facilitating social communication in autism spectrum disorders.
  • After this course, participants will be able to identify the level of evidence for a proposed treatment.
  • After this course, participants will be able to distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary approaches towards intervention for ASD.
  • After this course, participants will be able to select resources for parents requesting information on choosing treatments for their child.

I work strictly with children who have the diagnosis of Autism and it seems that every single one of them is trying a different approach. It was nice to read this presentation and get my head wrapped around all the theories. I feel that I can research everything with more effectiveness. .

Evaluation of the evidence supporting the use of various current treatment approaches for children with ASD. Although it was somewhat disheartening to learn that these treatment approaches are, for the most part, not validated by PICO studies, it was good to have this information and find out where to look in the future.

Lynne Hewitt, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Lynne Hewitt is Associate Professor and Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Communication Disorders at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She has taught at BGSU since 1999, and previously taught at the Pennsylvania State University. Her undergraduate education was in English and linguistics at Cornell University, and she received her Master's and Ph.D. in Communicative Disorders and Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech language pathology from the American Speech Language Hearing Association, and also has Ohio state licensure. She is a Board Recognized Specialist in Child Language. Her research interests are in child language development and disorders, with a particular interest in language assessment, pragmatic language development, and autism.
