Course Abstract

Models of memory and neurophysiological structures and systems used in laying down memory will be reviewed. The four pronged approach of functional rehabilitation of memory for the individual with brain injury will be presented with real world examples, materials and strategies provided.

Course Learning Outcomes Preview Exam

  • Participants will be able to identify five different types of memory and identify the brain structure used in each.
  • Participants will be able to differentiate fact memory versus skill memory.
  • Participants will be able to classify memory type by function.
  • Participants will be able to identify structures of the limbic system and functional involvement in memory.
  • Participants will be able to identify six strategies used to optimize residual functioning.

I am currently working with a teenaged student with a traumatic brain injury who is 7 years post injury. We continually question his capacity for retaining information. This article will help me and his team come up with strategies that will be beneficial for this student to lead a more productive life.

Victoria Harding, MBA, M.S., CCC-SLP

Victoria (Tori) Harding provides specialized program and location development for NeuroRestorative and acts as the Clinical Projects Coordinator for Virginia NeuroCare, a Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) program in Charlottesville, Virginia. Tori's primary research and clinical interest areas include outcome measurements in post-acute settings, the self-efficacy mechanism in post-acute brain injury, neurogenic communication disorders and family training for long-term success and advocacy. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, she works as a clinician and an educator and as a Certified Brain Injury Trainer, she teaches through the Academy of Brain Injury Specialists. Currently a PhD candidate at James Madison University, Tori received her Master's degree of Business Administration at Plymouth State University and completed her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
