Course Abstract

Social Skills programs are increasingly becoming a widely used component of intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within school and clinical settings. This course is intended to highlight the importance and relevance of applying behaviorally-based techniques and goals within the context of a group-based social skills intervention program for students with ASD.

Course Learning Outcomes Preview Exam

  • Upon completion of the presentation the learner should be able to identify the current state of research in terms of evidence-based social skills interventions for students with ASD.
  • Upon completion of the presentation the learner should be able to identify the role of behavioral analysis in planning intervention goals for social skills training.
  • Upon completion of the presentation the learner should be able to identify patterns of social communication that are typically deviant in adolescents with autism.
  • Upon completion of the presentation the learner should be able to identify the role of typical peers as social models within a group-based intervention.

Infirmative information re. forming a group for learning social skills. i would have liked info.re working on social skills in a one on one situation. Due to Medicaid regulations, we are not allowed to see in kids in group settings.

Moira Lewis, M.S., CCC-SLP

Moira Lewis is a speech-language pathologist, recently joining the YAI Autism Center in New York, NY. Moira conducts clinical speech and language evaluations, as well as social skills groups for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders. Moira received her Master's degree in communication disorders at Miami University, and completed her clinical fellowship within the Yale Child Study Center's Developmental Disabilities Clinic. While at Yale, Moira worked on a number of research studies examining the unique communication and social patterns of development among children with autism. Her involvement in research surrounded the areas of early identification and diagnosis, speech treatment for nonverbal children, and parent training.
