Course Abstract

Excellent clinicians find themselves unaware of techniques and methodologies for effective supervision and/or clinical instruction. In this seminar, participants will gain an understanding of basic communication theory, and methods for effective interpersonal communication with a special focus on skills that facilitate critical thinking and problem solving on the part of supervisees during supervisory conferences. Participants will also learn how communication styles impact the supervisory process, and how the language used in supervision can affect outcomes.

  • Participants will be able to identify how behavior and communication styles impact interpersonal interactions.

Lisa Cabiale O'Connor, M.A.

Lisa O'Connor has been involved with supervision since 1978. During her 20 years at California State University, Los Angeles, she taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, and supervised students in both on-campus and off-campus practicum's. She was the recipient of a federal training grant from the U.S. Department of Education, training over 30 bilingual paraprofessionals to work with monolingual SLPs. She has presented numerous workshops at state and national conferences, especially in the area of supervision. She has served on task forces and committees at both the state and national levels developing guidelines for the use of support personnel. She served on the working group that developed California regulations for the use of assistants. She is a past President of the California Speech-Language Hearing Association, a member of the ASHA Legislative Council from 1990 to 2007, and recent Chair of the ASHA Ad Hoc Committee on Supervision facilitating the development of new policy documents on this important area of practice. She recently served as Chair of the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Licensing Board in California.
