Hello fellow OTs,

June is Home Safety Month!  After all of the spring cleaning is done, it is time to roll up our sleeves and look at all the home projects that need to be completed during these long, warm days.  This home maintenance is even more crucial for our senior population.  With so many of our seniors “aging in place”, it is imperative that their environment be uncluttered, well lit, and accessible to prevent falls.  According to the Administration on Aging, the oldest baby boomers reached the age of 65 in 2011 and this trend will peak in 2030, with 72.1 million or 1 in 5 Americans over the age of 65.  We, as occupational therapists, can play a vital role in helping this population.

According to the AOTA, The goals of aging in place are to enhance the quality of life for older adults in their home environment, allow them to participate in valued activities, and ensure that people who plan to stay in their homes as they age make the necessary modifications to do so”.

We have several great courses in our library that can help build your knowledge and skills in this area:

These courses, along with more than 275 others, are included in your OccupationalTherapy.com CEU Total Access membership.  If you are not a member, sign up today!  With a variety of e-learning formats, including audio podcasts, it is easy to squeeze in a course or two this month and enjoy the weather at the same time!

Here’s to a great start to summer!  Enjoy!
