Heart failure (HF) affects an individual’s ability to engage in desired occupation leading to gradual loss of independence with ADLs, IADLs, and the development of activity limitations affecting their quality of life. Occupational therapists, being experts in behavior modification and activity analysis have a distinct role to play. This short course aims to fill this knowledge gap and provide foundational knowledge and treatment resources for practitioners and fully comprehend the pathophysiology and different evidence-based treatment strategies to promote optimal living for individuals with HF.

In this edition, we highlight Dr. Sharon Gutman's career and contributions to occupational therapy. Her work with homeless adults with mental illness has received national recognition. It is presented in an engaging Q & A format and highlights the OT pioneer's journey into occupational therapy and research accomplishments.

This course will explore the use of the Kawa model, a culturally sensitive occupational therapy model of practice, in geriatric care to establish rapport, identify client strengths and barriers, and improve communication. Attendees will gain knowledge regarding the components of the Kawa model, how to apply the model to geriatric practice, as well as the current research on use of the model in long term care, home care/caregiving, and community-based settings.

This course reviews the role of goal-setting in occupational therapy practice. The presenter and host attempt to reconcile differences between their own professional experience with goal-setting, historical precedent, current practice, and current evidence-based recommendations.

This session will explore how occupational therapy has been instrumental in the advancement of accessibility and inclusive design in technology and the video game industry. It will also discuss specific strategies for accessible gaming for people with disabilities.
