This presentation will focus on basic visual assessment and simple interventions that can be applied in the acute care setting. We will discuss considerations to make during discharge planning, including appropriate outpatient referrals and client education.

This course focuses on a case study for a 7-year-old male child experiencing difficulties with reading, homework, and following instructions during second-grade class. Utilizing developmental approaches and the Skeffington model, participants will learn both remediative and adaptive strategies to promote occupational performance.

We will discuss the developmental characteristics of children with visual impairments and specifically how these children develop trust in the feeding relationship. Strategies for breast and bottle feeding and transitions to solids and utensils will be presented in support of parent success.

In this course, participants will learn about the Montessori principles of independence according to one’s ability and the benefits of the prepared environment. Specifically, participants will learn about the fundamental principles of the Montessori method, how to conduct a Montessori-based session, Montessori-based steps to engagement that reduce unwanted behaviors, issues that may arise with this approach, and using case studies and video examples, how to set up activities/tasks for individuals with dementia using a Montessori Approach.

This is an introductory course to the art of mindfulness as an intervention tool for pediatric occupational therapists. Practitioners will gain an insight to the step by step process to not only practice mindfulness for their own wellbeing but will also learn techniques and strategies to effectively teach mindfulness to children.
