What are some important factors in promoting fracture healing?
Answer
One of the most important factors to promote in fracture healing is a balance between stability and mobility. This is accomplished by keeping the joints in a good position and well supported, while encouraging distal joint movement. In order to keep the joint in a good position during the immobility phase of healing, it needs to be placed in a "close-packed" position. This position is optimal because it keeps the ligaments taut, maintains maximal joint surface congruency and minimizes joint space. Distal joint movement is encouraged as it allows for tendon gliding, decreased edema, decreased scar tissue and increased function once the fracture is healed.
