Does the use of tape with splinting in pediatrics irritate their skin?
Answer
You need to be careful with the type of tape you use with this population. Taping is a good choice with splinting as it helps to maintain their position in the splint; however, you need make sure they do not have reactions with adhesive type material. It is a good idea to ask the caregivers if they have ever had a reaction to bandaids or adhesive products in the past. Paper tape is a good choice as it is easier on the skin. You will also want to moniter their skin closely.
