It was great to hear about the presentor’s experiences from her mission trips. The tiny details made me realize how different we practice OT, belief systems. In NY, we have a lot of Hispanic patients, and it is sometimes difficult to relay info. Thank you for the interview: Nobody would listen to us bec we do not speak English. A little patience can go a long way to learn more about our patients, but it can be difficult esp when schedule is packed.

As occupational therapy providers, we are expected to be professional and have awareness of the valued ways people spend their time. I love learning the theory and methodical steps to process cultural needs and create individualized support for clients and their families, if they are accepting of my role. I have to find sensitive ways to support the needs while working in the American healthcare and public school system.

I think more use of examples in a clinic environment would be very helpful. I had the privilege of doing a lot of travel and I find I use this life experience in every interaction I have w clients now. Engaging your client, getting them onboard w their therapy is critical to success. And the best way to do this I by showing genuine interest in their life, their family, their foods, their beliefs. The reward for both therapist and client is remarkable.

The information was very beneficial. It was interesting that she told her own experiences with different setting and how the goals that we sometimes address are not always the priority of every culture. I liked the short interview information from the families to provide feedback regarding how therapy was given and how there are some things that therapists can do different to adapt to their culture.
