Future of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Franklin Stein, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA

June 10, 2013

Question

What is the future of CAM?

Answer

As you know, the World Health Organization found that 80% of the world population uses some type of CAM.  In the United States, it is 40%, and I think it is increasing every year with more people using herbs and vitamins and exercising. We are also very concerned about diet.  Dietitians, naturopaths, chiropractors, and osteopaths are widely used and billions of dollars are being spent on CAM.  CAM is increasingly being used by occupational therapists.  As I mentioned, I use CAM in my own life and many physicians are now using CAM in their own life.  Stress management, meditation, diet, and mindfulness; all of that is being used by all health practitioners.
