Can a client be trained in passive ROM and "place and hold" techniques such as Duran's protocol and perform this independently at home?
Answer
There are lots of factors to consider. I would say that "yes" I train the majority of my clients in this technique. In standard cases, clients can be taught to passively range their affected joints (passive protective technique) and perform place and hold maneuvers by using their uninvolved hand. I instruct them to complete this protocol hourly at home for the maximum benefit.
With that being said, there are cases where the clients may be confused or struggle with this activity. I would in these cases perform these activities in the clinic or look for an alternative caregiver to assist.
