What is our take home message when it comes to electronic aids to daily living?

Answer

This is a topic that includes a lot of information and if you are interested in further information, I would be happy to point you to resources that might be helpful to you. For today, remember that many of the clients we work with do not have independent control over their devices within the environment, particularly at home. That basic control is a safety issue, particularly for the phone and door. There are probably thousands of people in the US whom do not have the ability to make a phone call, or to leave their home independently. As occupational therapists we want our clients to be as independent as possible.

Michelle Lange is an occupational therapist with over 35 years of experience and has been in private practice, Access to Independence, for over 15 years. She is a well-respected lecturer, both nationally and internationally, and has authored numerous texts, chapters, and articles. She is the co-editor of Seating and Wheeled Mobility: a clinical resource guide. She is the former NRRTS Continuing Education Curriculum Coordinator and Clinical Editor of NRRTS Directions magazine. Michelle is a RESNA Fellow and member of the Clinician Task Force. Michelle is a RESNA-certified ATP and SMS.
