It was perfection! I could see my own story in it and I loved all the life quotes and the messages to continue to advocate for OT in every facet of life! She ended by saying she is close to the end of her occupation but she is not done! "Once an OT always an OT" !

The information flowed, showed her personality and her deep love for Occupational Therapy. An instructor that demonstrated the desire to continue to teach, plant seeds of learning and cares of the talent of stimulating learning process. She was not threatening, or over challenging and trying to confuse the answers within the text with a twist of salt for one to question themselves. She made several good points that are enticing someone in or staying in the field of OT.

I liked her and her philosophy very much. Hands on and common sense, I especially liked the part where she says throw out the cones and to listen. As an OT 30 years, I see way too much of this. Sadly, I am not as optimistic about the future of OT, we are moving backwards and not forwards due to productivity requirements and point of service, and recently decreased therapy provision by insurances. Also, in SNF, the return to placing residents in diapers and telling them they can "go 3 times before it needs changed." Toileting has fallen off the radar throughout the industry, with OT as well. OBRA law has fallen by the wayside. I fear if we do not regain our focus on the most basic adl, we will cease to exist as a profession. Already, especially in home care, the bulk of the treatments are allotted to PT. Arm exercise is not important and that is seen as our primary role, and understandably so. While research shows toileting issues are related to at least 70% of falls, are the primary reason people get stuck in a nursing facility instead of going home, and being soiled is an unmeasurable contributor to infection, wounds, depression, and many other potentially fatal conditions, it is grossly overlooked and ignored in both OT and all of elder care.
