Hippotherapy is a uniquely, exciting and effective intervention that involves using a horse as a tool to achieve therapeutic goals. Occupational therapists can use the emotional bond between rider and horse and graded sensory motor stimulation to promote engagement, sensory processing and functional skills.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe the differences between equine assisted therapies, therapeutic riding and hippotherapy.
- After this course, participants will be able to identify attributes that are required of a horse suitable for use in hippotherapy.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe why and how occupational therapists use the horse as a treatment tool to improve bilateral coordination, functional hand skills and sensory processing.
