Scleroderma And The OT Role
Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease affecting the skin, internal organs, and blood vessels. People with scleroderma often develop severe contractures in their hands that make it very difficult to perform daily occupations. This course will review symptoms of scleroderma and the occupational therapist's role. Specific interventions to increase joint motion and manage daily tasks will be presented.

The purpose of this presentation is to offer Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, and patients a guide to confidently engage in treatment protocols specific to post-mastectomy and/or axillary node dissection. This educational guide covers a range of motion exercises; self-care/ADLs; energy conservation and cancer-related fatigue; outcomes measures to include in evaluation; as well as warning signs to prevent infection, lymphedema, and contractures.
