Appropriateness of The Functional Test for the Hemiplegic Upper Extremity (FTHUE) for Clients with Visual or Cognitive Deficits

Veronica T. Rowe, PhD, OTR/L

June 6, 2012

Question

If the client has severe visual acuity problems, perceptual deficits or cognitive deficits, does that make the FTHUE a less useful tool?

Answer

I think that is always a possibility with any assessment.  You are allowed to make some accommodations if the person has visual acuity or perceptual deficits.   I think if they are severe enough, the FTHUE might not be an appropriate tool.  The tasks are fairly simple.  Cognitively, that is usually not a problem, but again if a person is having so much difficulty following simple directions or demonstrations, it may not be an appropriate one.  Beyond that though, I really have not found it to be not appropriate.  Again it can be used for someone that has very little movement all the way to clients that have more movement.  Compared to some of the other tests that have been used like the Wolf Motor Function Test or the AMAT, this is applicable to a wider population.
