Question

What assessment tool facilitates client-centered goals the best in recovery based mental health?

Answer

My assessment approach is like my intervention approach.  It is client specific.  After I conduct an interview and obtain a baseline occupational profile, I want to look at their occupational performance by utilizing an assessment that is based upon what they want and what we think the barriers to that are.   It depends upon the client.  If someone wants to live in an apartment, then I will use something like the Kohlman Evaluation of Living Skills or the Milwaukee Evaluation of Daily Living Skills, MEDLS.  If someone is presenting with stress or anxiety as a barrier to them working, we might do a stress management questionnaire.  If we really want to look at components of social interaction and cognitive skills, then we might look at something like a Comprehensive Occupation Therapy Evaluation.  One of my favorite assessments is the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills.  It does require a significant amount of training.  It looks at what this person wants to engage in and breaks down tasks so that we can identify what the performance skill barriers are.  To me, assessment should be like treatment.  It is individualized.  There is not one assessment that looks at everything.  We also use all of the MOHO-based assessments here, the Worker Role Interview, the MOHOST, the OCAIRS, the OPHI.  We determine what the best assessment is based upon the person and their goals.

The American Occupational Therapy Association continues to promote the role of occupational therapy in mental health settings, as this is a core component of the Centennial Vision (AOTA, 2006) and a focus of the Association’s position papers (AOTA, 2017). The profession has identified the role of occupational therapy in mental health recovery and includes residential settings as a treatment area (AOTA, 2016), however there continues to be a scarcity of therapists working in these settings and a lack of research to identify our role. This presentation will introduce participants to occupational therapy’s role in residential mental health treatment. Strategies that can be used to advocate to housing providers in forming relationships will be identified. Components of program design and interprofessional collaboration will also be identified. Case studies highlighting assessments relevant to this setting and individual and group approaches will be discussed.
