Can Parenting Style Cause An Eating Disorder?

Julie Williams, LMFT

August 8, 2016

Question

Can parenting style cause an eating disorder? And then similarly can family behaviors cause an eating disorders? For example, only eating carbs when a diabetic family member is not home.

Answer

In terms of parenting style, we do see that there is a genetic component. Whether it is environmental or genes, they are still trying to figure that out. I think certain behaviors and phrases can be damaging. If your child is already thinking this way, you might reaffirm the negative view they have of themselves. Also, if you are only serving certain foods with restrictions, or if you are overly healthy and say, "You can never have cupcakes," this can be negative as well. I try to work with parents on being body positive and not focusing on weight and appearance, or certain foods.
