Presenter's enthusiasm, experience, and belief in what she was presenting. Included resources for what she's presenting. Even though I work with the children who feed into these classrooms, in Early Intervention infants and toddlers, it helps to know where "my" children are heading next, what might be expected of them, and what suggestions I can provide to parents to support their children in those programs.

Loved the examples of using play based approaches while still teaching to the standard curriculum. Totally agree that the current expectations for academic achievement in early childhood and kindergarten are developmentally out of sync and do not support the best opportunity for overall educational and life success.

Instructor gave clear, doable examples of using play to promote learning in Kindergarten and Pre K classrooms. Ms. Bowen included the important aspect of sensory based play. She gave evidence and mentioned and described the findings of research in the area of play based development. She stated the possible long term effects of both play based and academic focused teaching approaches. Some editing of content that is too repetitive, particularly around pages 5-6 is recommended.

This course was so validating as it aligns with my approach to imbedding OT services into play centers in the early childhood classroom. Our district focuses highly on academic achievement, but I am excited to share my knowledge gained from this course about incorporating play and movement with academic tasks and demonstrate the unique & valuable role OT plays in preschool development.

I did not hear the % of teachers that were stating that they were expected to teach things that are developmentally inappropriate. I do believe this and did recognize it and hear about it. I figured the answer was either 85% or 50% but should have gone with my gut if 85%. Who are these people in government that write the expectations?! ;)

Ms. Bowen-Irish presented multiple research sources to back up play-based curricula for teachers to meet core standards in a preschool and K setting with and without the assistance of an OT in the classroom. I loved all her gross motor, fine motor, spatial, and sequencing play-based activity ideas that connected with curricula/academic content so that OT skills and academic skills were addressed at the same time. Great course!!!!

Many parents and other teachers sometimes have the idea that O.T.'s "play with toys and games" during their therapy sessions, and it is frequently necessary at meetings to explain to both parents and teachers the importance of exploratory play in early learning, motor planning, sensory processing, role playing, creativity, and self-regulation. Some of info in PDF will prove useful to incorporate in my evaluation reports (further reinforcement to parents and teachers).
