Question

What are the primary benefits of pushing into the classroom for related service providers?

Answer

Pushing into the classroom allows therapists to provide related services directly within naturally occurring school activities, supporting the least restrictive environment mandates of IDEA. This contextually based model vastly increases the likelihood that a student will generalize and master learned skills by practicing them in the exact environment where they are expected to function. It also fosters stronger collaborative relationships with teachers and aides, who benefit from directly observing the therapist's model of functional strategies. Ultimately, this approach removes the burden from special needs students to transfer skills from an isolated therapy room back into a complex, busy classroom.
