The occupational therapy profession has long thought itself as being strength-based. But are we? How do we increase our focus on building on people’s strengths without focusing just on their deficits. This is part of the Continued Learning Podcast series.

The OT role in post- NICU treatment, OT assessments, formulation of goals, and evidenced-based treatment techniques will be discussed in this course. Practical strategies that can be immediately implemented into practice and ideas for supporting the families of our smallest clients will be discussed. The definition and incidence of bullying in adult living communities and day centers including what older adult bullying looks like in this population are reviewed in this session. Characteristics of older adult bullies as well their targets and gender differences will be explored. The reasons why bullying occurs as well as the five different types of bullies are defined. Interventions for the organization, the bully, and the target will be reviewed to help communities minimize (and prevent where possible) bullying and mitigate the effects on the target. Addressing bullying behavior among older adults is critically important for enhancing quality of life and promoting emotional well-being; strategies to create caring and empathic communities for all residents and staff members are also reviewed.

An overview of evidence-based assessment and treatment of individuals with Parkinson’s disease and the impact of the motor and non-motor symptoms on function and participation will be discussed in the course. The focus is on the use of appropriate outcomes to develop a person-centered, occupation-based approach to the treatment of individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

The benefits of utilizing simulation to promote clinical reasoning, enhance experiential learning, and as an alternative to a clinic-based Level I fieldwork experience will be discussed in this course. This is part of the Continued Learning Podcast series.

The clinical presentation of SLAP tear lesions and the typical evaluation and treatment of both conservative and post-operative cases will be discussed in this case.

Mindfulness can be used in personal and work settings to recenter the body and mind from anxiety and stress into calm. Mindfulness action builds upon one’s emotional intelligence and allows focused, productive responses to situations beyond one’s control. The practice of learning to be present and non-judgmental can be life-changing.

An overview of the experience of depression after brain injury will be discussed in this course. Specifically, it will describe how depression can impact occupational engagement after brain injury and address current literature in this area and future considerations for practice.

Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability in children, affecting 1-4 out of every 1,000 live births around the world. Current research overwhelmingly supports top-down, function & occupation-based interventions to improve skill performance and participation for children with CP. The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach, has proven to be an effective OT and PT intervention for improving functional goal performance and participation in kids with CP. This presentation will provide an introduction to the use of the CO-OP Approach for children with CP.
