Occupational therapy practitioners are often high-achieving, dedicated individuals who are prone to cognitive distortions such as personalization and all-or-nothing thinking. When systemic issues like staffing shortages arise, clinicians frequently internalize a sense of failure or experience intense guilt for taking necessary time off. Utilizing third-wave CBT allows practitioners to cultivate psychological flexibility by pausing to label these heavy emotions without immediately absorbing them as facts. For example, a therapist can actively reframe the thought "I am abandoning my unit" into a balanced perspective that prioritizes personal health and directly ensures safer, higher-quality patient care in the future. Olivia Petrucci is an experienced mental health occupational therapist who has practiced in acute inpatient psychiatry since April 2022. Over the years, she has led evidence-based groups focused on coping with challenging emotions, mindfulness, and safety planning.
