How Can OTPs Differentiate Between Standard Clinical Stress and the Deeper Onset of Professional Burnout?

Question

How can OTPs differentiate between standard clinical stress and the deeper onset of professional burnout?

Answer

While everyday clinical stress is short-term and typically resolves with adequate rest or a weekend off, burnout is a chronic state of occupational exhaustion that persists despite taking time away. Standard stress often manifests as a temporary feeling of being overwhelmed while remaining motivated, whereas burnout is characterized by emotional depletion, depersonalization, and a total loss of internal motivation. Practitioners experiencing burnout frequently cycle through intense irritability or total emotional numbness during patient care. Rather than reflecting personal weakness, these persistent symptoms are direct neurological responses to long-term, unmanaged workplace stressors. Monitoring these differences through validated self-screens allows practitioners to intervene before chronic fatigue compromises their overall well-being.

Burnout is prevalent among occupational therapy practitioners and can result in many adverse effects, including chronic fatigue, emotional exhaustion, reduced job satisfaction, absenteeism, decreased quality of care, and higher turnover rates (Brollier et al., 1987; Dreison et al., 2018). This training reviews the factors contributing to burnout, the adverse effects burnout can have on a practitioner, and key strategies using both mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to reduce personal levels of burnout.
