The presenter shared insightful information regarding old views on how to apply therapeutic treatment to people with autism but now there are new studies how some of those practices cause more trauma/ harm than beneficial. I enjoy the slides that explain how we can advocate for awareness, be more mindful of bias and how we can be more inclusive. This will lead to better client connections and them feeling understood.

This is such an important course and mindset shift. I would love to see neuro-affirming language in assessments we commonly use such as the Sensory Profile-2. I feel the SP2 is very negative and I have shifted away from using it since it's not affirming.

There could have been more concreate examples of things to do with clients. Like a lot of courses that focus of neurodiversity there was some talk of sensory strategies but not everyone with Autism has concerns about their sensory regulation.

Dr. Spielmann explained the meaning of neurodivergence respectfully and compassionately, and her presentation was a wonderful affirmation of how all professionals, and the public as well, should reflect on how they view and interact with neurodivergent people for greater acceptance, tolerance, and more inclusive interactions for everyone's benefit. Thank you so much!!!

Excellent speaker who shared a wealth of information; the only thing missing was a case study to help apply this approach to treatment, particularly how to accept/validate a child's needs when their stim/monologue proves disruptive to others, impeding their classmate's learning.

I’ve been wanting to learn more about neurodiverse-affirming practice and feel this really helped educate me. I would have liked to have seen more specific examples in treatment such as how to help such individuals be more functional and independent while still respecting their neurodivergence. For example, how to handle a specific concern or behavior brought to our attention that’s impacting a child’s occupation. How to better help them be more functional in a neurodiverse-affirming way.

While it is exciting to see this topic go in this direction, some pause is warranted. I understand that the person with Autism carries a weight to understand the neurotypical but there is also a weight for the ally. In my opinion it's better to disclose difficulties in these relationships like the neurotypical feeling lonely, possibly having the lion's share of adult responsibilities or ignoring true red flags. These kids grow up; it would be a disservice to leave anyone happy but unequipped.
