At my homecare agency, we also have a Palliative and Hospice component. This course was very informative in reiterating just how meaningful OT intervention can be in Palliative care. It gave me ideas on how to justify to other clinicians the importance of referring OT more often, more appropriately.

I used to work in a hospice setting (not as an OT) and they did not allow OT's to work there. I chose this course because I wanted to hear the rationale for OT's working in both palliative care and hospice. This course helped explain the connection between end of life care and what an OT can help to improve ie. dignity, function, independence, leisure activities, etc.

I will occasionally have patient’s that I see on hospice and palliative care. The role of OT in these types of situations has not always been clear to me, I also thought it was just teaching positioning, family education, transfers, etc. This course showed me a deeper approach to how I can truly help patients receiving palliative care especially through meaningful occupations such as leisure activities, social participation, and adaptations to make everyday activities easier for patients.

I wish I would have had this perspective before my father passed. I think it could have been helpful in advocating services for him. I enjoyed the course due to the clarity of the material and the advocacy for more OT in Palliative Care. It is a difficult area to immerse oneself in, but the need is great. Hopefully with ongoing efforts, OT can be largely recognized as a profession that can enhance care and quality of life for patients during this complicated and often difficult time of life.

Good overview of occupation and palliative care but left out anything related to culture. Occupational Therapy should be on addressing supporting cultural activities in hospice and palliative care especially when the patient is unable to participate outside the home for the most part. Information on how to manage that would have beneficial.
