Updated information on mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) will be presented to include discussion of: 1) blast injury characteristics in civilians and military personnel, 2) promising neuroimaging methods for assessing mTBI, 3) evidence-based treatment appropriate for individuals with mTBI, and 4) future areas of research needed to better understand mTBI.

Theory of mind (ToM) deficits occur not only in children with autism spectrum disorders, but also in many children who have a variety of language impairments. This presentation will describe the development of ToM, types of ToM, and strategies for assessing ToM. The role of ToM in social and academic skills will be explained and suggestions will be given for promoting the types of ToM that underlie social and academic skills.

This course will review perspectives on intolerance for eating and oral care. It will include clinical examples of sensory disorders in adults with traumatic brain injury and children with developmental disorders. It will describe approaches for increasing clients’ willingness to eat and engage in oral care.

This presentation will describe the defining features and symptomology of ADHD in children as well as common school-related difficulties associated with the disorder. The CEU presentation will also highlight evidence-based interventions typically used in schools for children with ADHD and discuss the potential use of stability balls as a means of enhancing student’s on-task and in-seat/ball behavior in the classroom.

Excellent clinicians find themselves unaware of techniques and methodologies for effective supervision and/or clinical instruction. In this seminar, participants will gain an understanding of basic communication theory, and methods for effective interpersonal communication with a special focus on skills that facilitate critical thinking and problem solving on the part of supervisees during supervisory conferences. Participants will also learn how communication styles impact the supervisory process, and how the language used in supervision can affect outcomes.

This presentation includes a review of brain anatomy basics, including details of the physical and anatomical structural support system for the brain and a description of the physics of linear and rotational acceleration/deceleration injury to the brain. Primary and secondary injuries associated with these traumatic forces and their effects on brain tissue, vasculature, and intracellular neurochemical processes will be discussed. The particular areas of the brain most vulnerable to damage in these circumstances will be identified and reviewed.

This session will help participants to identify and treat deficits related to the domains of social-interaction, social-communication, and social-emotional regulation thereby allowing for more appropriate service delivery to this challenging population.
