Wow! what a great topic to research and provide to families with individuals with special needs. And you are correct: disasters abound everywhere. Living in "Toronado Alley" the Sensory Safe Evacuation plan could be used effectively in case of extreme weather: high wind, flash floods, cloud to ground lightning strikes where evacuation may be the only way to be safe. This frame of reference-planning ahead of time-will keep the entire family safe before, during and after the disaster has occurred.

It is an important concept that can be generalized for other situations (eg. lock down drill in school). The general public will not understand the needs of SPD persons and it is up to caregivers to plan for best possible outcome/life saving steps.

The information was good and practical and you could tell the instructor was passionate and experienced in the topic. If you don't work in SI a lot of this would maybe be new information or at least extra things to think through as a clinician. The worksheet, and the instructor's attention to maintaining the needs and dignity of the families she serves were both excellent. Thank you for the information and the realistic tools and considerations if there ever is an emergency!

As I look out my window at the smoky sky from yet another wildfire, I think these are times when we all should consider evacuation plans. Yes, climate change is a real thing. If the Sensory Safe Evacuation Planner is used by caregivers, I think terms like "Proprioception", "Vestibular", and "Interception" should be replaced with terms that are more familiar to everyday people.
