An overview of the “hidden sense” of interoception is reviewed in this course. The impact of interoception on daily life will be discussed. Emphasis will be on using the current evidence to address interoception during occupational therapy intervention.

Public health research has shown that many children experience sleep disorders; however, many pediatric therapists feel uncomfortable providing sleep interventions for children. Using the "Hit the SAAQ" approach (created with Dr. Jason Browning), participants will learn how to evaluate and intervene to promote Sleep duration, sleep Architecture, and Address sleep disorders using evidence-based approaches to promote overall sleep Quality for preschool and school-aged children.

The role of social-emotional learning as a means of facilitating the development of self-regulation in children will be discussed in this course. Using an occupation-centered, top-down approach, participants will learn how to incorporate evidence-based social-emotional learning approaches to improve occupational performance in school-aged occupations.

Starting from a perspective of treatment initiatives to engage and connect with those on our caseloads, we will delve into a variety of initiatives. How can we facilitate specialization, self-regulation, executive function and social connectedness? These kids need our help and often not just from a consultative model. Come and be creative, to ignite teenage treatment.

What is happening with teenagers today? There are many myths about adolescence. Come to this 2-part seminar to better understand what neuro-developmental changes are occurring in the teenage brain. As brain transforms into young adulthood, research documents that the brain is pruning itself, to discard what is not interesting or meaningful. There will be an overview of Universal Model of Design in education, to consider a new perspective. From this perspective, our treatment will be more on point and successful.

How to incorporate sensory strategies for emotional management and self-regulation in pediatric practice is emphasized in this course. Emphasis will also be on preventing behaviors and meltdowns related to sensory processing, collaborating with teachers and parents to implement them into daily routines, and monitoring outcomes for documentation and program evaluation. You will have the opportunity to create a plan for a child on your caseload for generalization to practice.

The session begins with an overview of cortical visual impairment (CVI), including the characteristics and in-depth description of the phases of CVI. Strategies for creating an effective environment and considerations to keep in mind while conducting wheelchair evaluation and developing manual and power mobility skills for independence are discussed.

Dr. Tara Warwick walks you through a framework for creating stronger relationships to better understand challenging behavior in the children you serve. You’ll learn practical techniques for preventing misbehaviors and how to teach critical skills such as emotional regulation, functional communication, and social interaction.

This course presents the current knowledge on innovative approaches to wheelchair skills training for children and adolescents. A renowned program that has been used internationally with adults and recently evaluated in pediatrics is also described.

This course will focus on assessment for assistive technology, putting the focus on assessing the individual’s capabilities and their specific assistive technology activity and participation needs.
