Qigong and its use for the geriatric population will be explored in this course, including its history and benefits, seated Qigong exercises, breaths, and acupressure points.

The impact of normal aging on various systems and the differences between frail and well elders are described in this course. Information and interventions are discussed that allow interprofessional team members to support functional mobility, nutrition and hydration, and health management in their geriatric clients, in order to promote successful aging.

Occupational therapy practitioners play an increasingly important role in caring for the hospitalized geriatric patient, an expanding population. This course provides an overview of geriatric OT evaluation and treatment, introduces geriatric syndromes, and explores our valuable roles on the health care team.

This course is designed to assist the long term care (LTC) therapist to have a better understanding of the changing body of an elderly resident and the increased risk of sitting in an abnormal posture. It discusses health issues related to prolonged sitting in an abnormal posture. The course identifies the goals of an LTC when it comes to positioning the elderly resident in a wheelchair considering these postures and health-related issues.

This course will explore the use of the Kawa model, a culturally sensitive occupational therapy model of practice, in geriatric care to establish rapport, identify client strengths and barriers, and improve communication. Attendees will gain knowledge regarding the components of the Kawa model, how to apply the model to geriatric practice, as well as the current research on use of the model in long term care, home care/caregiving, and community-based settings.

Do we accept that disrupted sleep is 'normal' in the elderly? While it is widely accepted that elderly residents have trouble sleeping, what is understood about the nature of those sleep difficulties? Is disrupted sleep the cause or the effect of cognitive decline? of heart disease? of challenging behaviors? This course will discuss specific sleep challenges in the elderly as well as appropriate staff responses and treatment options. Specific discussion on sleep culture in our residential environments, and how can we improve our environments for sleep promotion.

As the population ages, health care providers, including occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants, must employ effective methods of fall risk assessment, prevention, and management to prevent the serious injuries, decreased mobility, and loss of independence caused by falls. This session will discuss evidence-based interventions for falls, emphasizing the role of occupational therapy in the interdisciplinary management of falls in both the institutional and community settings.

This course will explore the use of multisensory environments to decrease negative behaviors in geriatric clients with dementia. Attendees will gain knowledge regarding current research, creation of a multisensory environment, program development, and how to document patient outcomes.
